A mother's worst fear

Monday night Emmersyn was not in the mood to sleep in her crib. She has a horrible ear infection and ruptured ear drum so laying flat was not an option for her (based on her screaming). She wanted her momma to hold her so I held her while she slept and I stayed up most of the night in my recliner.  Tuesday I was exhausted. I had promised Teagan a trip to the zoo after school so I knew we had to go.
My mother in law called Tuesday morning and asked if she could take the girls shopping and to lunch. Normally, I would say no right away or make up an excuse. I'm not one that ever lets my kids go in a car with someone else.  However, the thought of all 3 kids at the zoo was not something I thought sounded fun anymore so I agreed to have Emmersyn go with my in laws after school for a few hours. It was her first trip alone with anyone except Matt of course.
Teagan, Brennen, and I had a good time at the zoo. We walked the whole zoo and saw everything and Teagan even rode the merry go round all by herself for the first time. When we were leaving, Teagan told me she was thirsty and asked for a cheeseburger so we headed to the McDonald's a few blocks from the zoo. I placed my order and my phone rang. I declined it since I was at the intercom. Matt called right back so I picked up. All I heard was "mom was in a head on collision. Prius is totaled. Other driver died". I skipped out in the line and drove as fast I could go to back to Indiana. I rushed to Clark Memorial and vaguely remember calling my mom who was in Leavenworth seeing patients. She rushed back to meet me.  Of course once I got to Clark and unloaded the other kids, Matt called to tell me they were going to Kosair instead so I ran back to the car and rushed back over the bridge to Kosair. As I drove past, I saw them unloading Emmersyn from the ambulence. She was still strapped in her car seat on the stretcher. Poor thing. Matt said they were not going to unhook her in case something was wrong it would unstabilize her and they wanted the doctors to be the ones to release her.
End result is Emmersyn escaped with just bruises and cuts. She will probably be slightly sore, but thankfully she is fine. Thank God for carseats. The nurse actually thanked me for using one. He said most people don't use car seats once the babies get out of a carrier type. I found that crazy since Teagan is still in a booster type.
My inlaws were not as lucky as Emmersyn.  My mother in law got the worst of it. Her foot was pinned under the pedals, her forearm bone was almost out of her skin and snapped.  Her ankle bones were shattered. She is in critical condition at UofL. Matt said she was so concerned about Emmersyn though and couldn't move to look at her in the car. They kept trying to get Emmersyn to make noise in the backseat, but Emmy wouldn't.
My father in law has fractured ribs and a fractured sternum.  He is in ICU with a morphine drip for pain. He is older and has oxygen on too for lung issues.
Please pray for a full recovery for everyone and please use car seats!!! I am amazed that Emmersyn is walking around like normal a few hours after the accident while everyone else is in ICU or dead. The other driver had a heart attack while driving, crossed a grassy median, and hit my in laws car head on. Thank God no one was hurt worse than they are!

  1. What a horrible day. So happy Emmersyn is okay. I can't imagine what you felt seeing your baby girl on the stretcher. Praying for your in-laws.
