First ER visit

Friday, July 6, 2012, we made our first visit to the ER with any kids! Can't believe we've had a baby for over 3 years and only made our first trip now honestly, but I was hoping to not ever have to go!

Poor Emmersyn had been so sick with the poos that I began to worry. I had called her doctor on Thursday and all they said was the stomach bug was going around and to do the BRAT diet and push fluids. (I already knew that much from already having Teagan, but thought they may offer other advice.) Thursday, I tried to feed her bananas, but she is NOT a fan of that. She had been ok with fluids though so although I was worried, I still knew she was ok...until that afternoon/evening, she refused her bottles. No formula, no water, no pedialyte, no fluids! YIKES!

Friday, she woke up with more poo and refused her bottle again. I knew it was time to take her in. I called the dr office and they said if she was dehydrated, she would have to go to get fluids at the hospital. I decided to skip the doctor and just head into the ER and save the middle man and 3 hours. Thankfully, Teagan got up extra early Fri and we were out the door by 7. I had called my mom, but she was at work and said Teagan could hang out there for the morning and "help" her!

Emmersyn and I headed a few blocks over to the ER. They did a heel stick to get blood work started. The doctor said she wasn't overly dehydrated, but didn't want to risk it getting worse quickly b/c she's so tiny and refused to eat. They also did a rectum swab to send to the labs. All the labwork came back as having rotovirus and also being dehydrated. They wanted to start IV asap, but the nurses had a hard time finding a vein to insert them. They tried both arms and both feet. Between pregnancy hormones and a screaming baby, I lost it. I cried probably worse than she did. FINALLY, they send in another nurse (#6 of the day) to try and she was able to get it in her little foot. The IV finally started around 7 hours after being there!!! She got 168units of fluids and had a wet diaper finally!

We are not completely out of the woods yet. She had to stop her regular formula and switch to soy for 10-14days. We also are watching for signs of dehydration again and have to take her back if she doesn't stop poo-ing by Monday. Today was a good day though. She didn't reject any feeds and although she isn't eating as much, at least she is eating!
